In what feels like an overly long episode of "Glee", "Rock of Ages" is a wholly unsatisfying and forgettable musical. Most if not all of the acting is completely wooden and the singing flatter than day old soda. Only once in a while would something grab my attention only momentarily and amuse me. A musical number involving Alec Baldwin and Russell Brand was able to entertain me and make me forget that the rest of the movie was dragging so slow I felt as if I was reaching the three hour mark.
The movie begins with Sherrie (Julianne Hough) arriving in Hollywood fresh off the bus from Oklahoma looking for her claim to fame. Drew (Diego Boneta) is a bartender at The Bourbon Room, a nightclub that gave birth to the career of music legend Stacee Jaxx (Tom Cruise). Sherrie and Drew eventually fall for each other, break up, and reunite all set to some of the greatest hits of the 80's. We all love the songs, but the singing in this movie is very dull and pale in comparison to the originals.
Now I didn't walk into this with the highest expectations. I did think, however, that at least Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin would give decent performances, but sadly none of the characters are fully developed and the stars can only do so much with what they are given. Adam Shankman gives us his usual fare, but at this point it feels as if he is just going through the motions.
